April 2012 tornado strikes Southwest
Arlington. AFD with other City
departments quickly help the community
return to normal.
On April 3, 2012 Southwest Arlington became the target of an EF2
tornado. At 1:30 p.m. our Outdoor Warning System was activated
with a tornado reported on the ground at Highway 287 and Sublett
Road. The storm was packing winds of 135 miles per hour and cut a
path of destruction 150 yards wide and 4.6 miles long. The AFD
Emergency Operations Center was activated and crews immediately
responded to rescue citizens and stabilize neighborhoods. The
Department’s Mobile Command Center was deployed to Green Oaks
Nursing Home, which was badly damaged by the storm. Fire
personnel evacuated 129 residents from the nursing home and conducted search and rescue
missions in all impacted areas. Following the emergency response, the Department partnered
with the rest of the City departments to help our community return to normal as quickly as
possible. Our community knows the Arlington Fire Department cares.
