AFD, Arlington Independent School District, and Tarrant County College
The Department partnered with AISD and TCC to establish the AISD Firefighter Academy, a two year high school / dual college credit program held at Sam Houston High School. Arlington firefighters provide education and real life practical experiences to provide students with the knowledge and tools to compete in the very competitive fire service and emergency medical services job market. When they graduate from high school, they have earned 24 hours of college credit and state certification.
AFD and APFF Local 1329- Vial of Life
A cooperative effort with the Arlington Professional Firefighters Association, the Vial of Life Program provides containers to citizens for storage of medical information. Participants in the program are given a form to complete with pertinent medical history and emergency contacts. Once completed, the form is placed in an oversized pill capsule and stored in the refrigerator. A front door sticker and a refrigerator magnet are visual cues for emergency responders that the resident has a Vial of Life.
AFD, APD, and the Texas Rangers
The Fire and Police Departments along with the Texas Rangers MLB organization worked together to discourage teenage drivers from texting while driving. A press conference was held in the summer of 2011, followed by distribution of posters to local high schools emphasizing the importance of staying focused while driving. The AFD responds to many needless accidents caused by inattentive drivers. Retired Lieutenant Curtis Dunn played an important role in the facilitation of this important public service effort.
