HOME PLATE Smooth Ride: Arlington Increases Street Spending NEWS STORY The City recognizes that smooth, well- maintained streets are important to residents. Since adopting a “worst first” approach to street repairs and maintenance in 2015, Arlington has reduced its work list of streets needing a complete rebuild from 320 lane miles down to 278 lane miles. To keep progress moving forward, the City increased street maintenance and rebuilding spending to approximately $57 million in FY 2017. Abram Street Bridge Over Johnson Creek Completed A new Abram Street bridge over Johnson Creek opened to drivers in early February. The former bridge, located east of Collins Street near Meadowbrook Park, was demolished as part of the City’s Abram Street rebuild project from Cooper Street east to the Grand Prairie border. The new bridge is about nine feet higher than the old bridge to help alleviate roadway flooding during heavy storms. Arlington voters approved funding for the multi-year Abram Street rebuild project during the 2003 and 2008 bond elections. Additional funding comes from the Tarrant County Transportation Bond Program. In addition to reconstructing the bridge, the City completed work on Abram between Stadium Drive and Collins Street in FY 2017. The final section of rebuild, between Cooper and Collins streets, begins in FY 2018. • Several bridges opened in FY 2017 as part of the $340-million SH 360 South Project.
