Viper 640s in the Frosty Viper Series
Fort Walton is sailing! February was
quite the month with lots of things
happening on the water. The second
installment on the inaugural Frosty
Nipple Viper Series was February
1st and 2nd with an informative and
free clinic provided by North Sails.
Turn out for this event has been great
with sailors participating from across
the Gulf Yachting Association and
Fleet Captain
beyond. The weather has been windy
Sam Grant
and wet for both competitors and race
committee alike, but spirits are high coming into the final
races of the series on February 29th and March 1st. A big
thank you to Brian Harrison for spearheading this event.
Our local sailors have not been idle. The Zevin PHRF and
the Portsmouth Frosty Nipple Small Boat series are in full
swing. The final day of racing for the Zevin is on March
15th and will be held in conjunction with the Spring
Mongolian BBQ. This will be a fun day to be down at the
Club. With foul weather causing the cancellation of
February 16th Portsmouth Frosty Nipple, March will host
two days of racing, one regularly scheduled and the other
a make-up day that will mark the conclusion of this annual
event. Racing days are March 8th and 29th.
The Optis continue to progress under the mentorship of
our sailing director Paul Beaudry, ECSA President Robert
Harrison, and our new Junior Director Valerie Custer. The
youngsters are doing great and have even traveled for
some professional coaching. They have joined the
Portsmouth Frosty Nipple Series sailing in their own
competitive little fleet.
March is filled with sailing and race committee
opportunities. If you are interested in getting involved in
any aspect, please email your Fleet Captain at
[email protected].
