FWYC Sports News
The temperature is rising and sea breezes are building. The sailing calendar is
packed, and I'm looking forward to the next few months of hosting regional-level
regattas as well as supporting the Fort Walton Yacht Club travelling sailors. On
June 7-8, we will play the host to the Billy Bowlegs Regatta. This year it is
scheduled in conjunction with the pirate invasion of the City of Fort Walton as
well as the Fort Walton Yacht Club Pirate Party hosted by the Rear
Commodore. It is shaping up to be an unforgettable weekend.

On June 20-22, the cruising fleet is heading over to Pensacola (some by boat,
some by car) for their June cruise, complete with a FWYC block at a Blue
Wahoos game. There are 32 members and guests signed up so far, but there are
tickets still available for those members and guests interested in joining! Contact
Pat Tye if you are interested.
The following weekend, June 27-28, three FWYC boats will travel to the
Pensacola Yacht Club to compete in the GYA Challenge Cup. Good luck to
Myasasaur (Deborah & Craig Wilusz), Two Pot Screamer (P/C Dave
Vaughan), and Eve N Keeled (R/C Sam & Jennifer Grant). We have had
several members asking about being spectators. I believe at least one FWYC
spectator boat will be a sailboat and I am planning on having a small motorboat
for support. If you are interested in coming on the water to cheer on our sailors
and see what it's all about, please contact me and come join the fun!
Of course, the Fourth of July weekend is our annual GYA Capdevielle Event,
the Meigs Regatta. We are looking forward to that group of visitors also.
We are proud of our yacht club and its members; we are very much looking
forward to hosting some of these bigger events.
GYA News
In May, I had the privilege of attending the
GYA Opening Regatta as the voting
representative for the Fort Walton Yacht Club
and as the GYA One Design Council Chair
2013-2015. The Opening Regatta was hosted
by Southern Yacht Club. GYA Vice
Commodore and FWYC member, George
Goodall, gave a very eloquent invocation, and we were well-represented on
the water by Jeff Brown, Shelby Brown, Seth Cooke, Zach Grant, and
Ashley Sukalski. As far as GYA business goes, the highlights of the meeting
were the resumption of the GYA Capdevielle Boat Committee to explore
the details of changing the Capdevielle sailing platform. The three race
format option for Capdevielle events has been removed, and the Knost
Regatta has adopted the six race format. If you haven't had time to check out
the updated website on www.gya.org, you should. It's been redesigned and GYA Opening Regatta at Southern
updated, and almost all of the committees have reinvigorated efforts to make
Yacht Club
it the most relevant regional sailing resource available. If you have any
interest in working on any of these committees or have any questions, please contact me at any time.
