Page 3 The Commodore’s Corner Greetings: Summer is finally here! June is finally upon us, the waters have warmed and the "boating season" is in full swing. Students will be out of school for the summer soon and the ECSA Sailing Camps are just around the corner. I am looking forward to the sailing camps again. I enjoy seeing all the young people at the club. There is a certain energy they always seem to bring with them, that if you embrace it, it becomes infectious. I find myself doing things I would never have dreamed when running around with my seven year old. on value we are looking for ways to invest our resources to see the positive impacts it will have on our club. One such recent investment is our partnership with the Boy Scouts of America in starting a new Sea Scout Ship. This new ship needs an investment of time and some space for meetings, which we already have. I am looking forward to many years of working with Sea Scouts. In speaking with Past Commodores from other yacht clubs that have a Sea Scout Ship, the program has made a great impact on their clubs. I know it will do the same for us. Another forward moving initiative is that the Board of Directors recently voted to enact our Trial Membership for the Summer. The "Fill the Slips" committee has developed a plan to target boat owners in the area and invite them down to a brunch in June to expose our club to them. This is another great investment to expose ourselves to a wider audience, and let more people see the beautiful property we have and the amenities available to yacht club members. These are just two areas where we are investing in our club to increase the value. There are many more underway from the Vice Commodore's work on infrastructure, the Rear Commodore's party planning and the Fleet Captain's regatta planning. We are making investments in our club this year and I am so happy to see them paying-off! I hope you are enjoying this year at the club. As we enter the summer season we will have more opportunities to show our friends, family and As we continue to look forward I encourage each of you guests how the Fort Walton Yacht Club has F.U.N. to express the value you find in the club. As we invite Commodore Bobby Dewrell guest s and recruit new members to the club, it is [email protected] important that we are able to show and exemplify the value we find in our club. When focusing on value, we will find those people that share our same ideals and Welcome Aboard look forward to participating in the things we as a group want to do. Ultimately, new members add to the value of our club. They provide new points of view and fresh New Members insights adding to our pool of time, talent and treasures. While it seems like only yesterday I was taking my oath as Commodore, my year at the helm is at its mid-point. In looking back over the past six months, I feel we have come very far as a club. I hear healthy debate among the membership for the right things to do to see our club grow. We have had to make some hard decisions in these past six months and we have made those together, as a team. I have written in the past about value versus cost. If we are focused solely on cost, we are only limiting what we can do as a club. We must focus on value to move ahead. Value includes a view of cost. It allows us to look at the cost in terms of the investments we are making in our club house, docks, grounds, staff and ultimately members. If we are focused on cost we are concerned with the money we are spending.
