The Cooke family and the

the Easter Bunch, 2014
took to enable kids and families to enjoy the Club and expand their use of the Club.
Darren said it was a great way to "give back to the club" as well as providing healthy,
safe and fun activities for the kids growing up here. They even hired a part time "sailing
attendant" who was on the beach checking out adults and juniors on the sailboats,
helping rig boats, organizing the sail lockers so that parts were easily found, and fixing
boats when needed. The attendant provided a measure of safety at the club which
parents enjoyed.
Darren had a J30 and raced it in PHRF races for about five years. He decided that the
boat was too much for his young children, so he sold it and now primarily races Lasers
in club races as well as national races which take him to places like the New York Yacht
Club and Clearwater, FL. Seth and Darren also race in the GYA Capdevielle races and
Seth races his own Finn at the Club. Sherri has never really gotten into sailing, but she
enjoys relaxing at the club and being on Pamela B, which Darren inherited from his
grandfather.
Having so many friendships of 30 plus years has been one of the highlights of being
a yacht club member. The Fort Walton Yacht Club has been like a “home away from
home” and a "friends are like family" kind of place. Darren feels indebted to long-time
members like Phil Pritchett who have had a wonderful influence on him and his
children. Darren summed up his yacht club membership like this, "I have had a very
good, positive experience at the Fort Walton Yacht Club. I'm extremely grateful to be
Darren and boys on a Flying a member here."

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
The Covenant Hospice Annual Volunteer Appreciation
dinner was held at the Fort Walton Yacht club on April 26th.
It was a lovely location and everyone agreed we should have
our annual dinner there next year. A huge thank you to
Carole Langford for making this happen and to the Fort
Walton Yacht Club commodore, Bobby Dewrell and John
Farris, treasurer, for opening the Yacht Club to us. We are
already looking forward to next year!

FROM FT. WALTON SAIL AND POWER
SQUADRON
On Friday evening, 16 May, the Ft. Walton Sail and Power
Squadron sponsored an event - "Ready, Set, Wear It!"- to
open the 2014 National Safe Boating Week, 16 - 23 May.
FWSPS committed to donating one dollar to the FWYC
Junior Sailing Program for every person who participated
by wearing their Personal Flotation Device ("Life Jacket")
during the cocktail hour. Many people generously added
their donations to the "pot", and we were able to contribute
a total of $125.00 to the Juniors. MANY THANKS to all
of you!!
