Fort Walton Yacht Club Letter Log February 2018 30° 25.60’N 86° 35.58’W Commodore’s Corner By Commodore Faye Black email: [email protected] THE COLD MONTH OF JANUARY has come and gone, but the warm, friendly spir- it at FWYC kept the club busy throughout the month. We mourned the passing of Past Commodore Don Raimey, then celebrated his amazing life with a cannon salute followed by toasts with his family. Don and Lea had been members since 1966 and remained ac- tive until his passing. We will all miss Don around the Club. Your Flag Officers, Directors and Committee chairs have hit the ground running for the new year. There are exciting things happening. If you have some time, expertise or just a friendly smile I encourage you to sign up for a committee. P/C Skip Harrington’s welcom- ing committee is expanding, we need members engaged, feeling a part of our club. As you will read in the Flag Officer reports, there are many opportunities to become involved. For the first time in several years, we have a Junior Chair. Director Diane Wells will be con- tacting members with children to try to involve our younger members in sailing and social activities. If you have children at home, please let the office know that you would like to find out more about our Junior Program. Eight FWYC members attended the GYA Winter Meeting at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans the second weekend of January. Many initiatives for expanding memberships, yachting and social, were discussed. We all came away with new ideas as to how to en- hance the value of being a member of our yacht club. There is a motion from the January Board meeting to include the back patio as a no-smoking area. This motion will be voted on at the February Board meet- ing on 20 February. The motion is posted on the Club bulletin board. Please inform the Directors as to your opinions on this matter. Email links are on the left side of the FWYC website home page, www.fwyc.org. Proper procedures will be followed at the meeting. Therefore, if you desire to address the Board, please email Secretary Kerrie Serpa, [email protected], to be placed on the agenda. 2
