internationally (the Netherlands, London, Texas, Georgia, Australia, etc). NuWu and ANDE has allowed me to utilize another part of my creativity and has challenged me in ways I am not challenged in my current position. I have become a fuller person thanks to NuWu.
Q: Are you a part of any organizations which assist in changing the lives of others, such as youth, homeless, battered women or me & etc. or what do you do to make a difference in the lives of others?
A: Yes, I am part of several organizations which assist in changing the lives of others. 1. Big Brothers and Big Sisters, which I have been a volunteer with since about 2007. To-date, I have been matched with two Little's (and am waiting to be matched with another). Meanwhile, I am participating in Beyond School Walls, where the school partner buses in our Little's twice a month throughout the school year, through my current job. 2. Career Gear Houston is an organization which provides interview attire for men who have successfully completed a job training program. 3. Skills for Living (S4L) partners with local underprivileged high schools where they offer a class teaching
life skills (ie. job interviewing, balancing check books, what it takes to get into college, types of insurance, etc). Before the school year ends, S4L, hosts a 2-3 day simulation game called The Game of Life where the students from the various schools put into 'practice' the life skills they learned throughout the school year. Thus, they get to see how their life choices affect their future. There are a few more organizations, I have also worked with.
Q: What words of encouragement would you give to anyone?
A: Life has so much to offer. Our present situation, no matter how dismal or challenging, does not have to be a long term self-fulfilling prophecy. Believe and take positive action - no matter how small - to move yourself forward. Eventually, not always in your preferred timing, a breakthrough will occur.
