Develop your
life skills
during
lockdown
Barclays LifeSkills has curated a selection of
its most relevant free resources for young
people to work on at home during the
coronavirus crisis. Here are five to try out
during lockdown.
1
SKILLS FOR
STAYING POSITIVE
Developing a positive attitude, also known
as a ‘growth mindset’, is invaluable – both
now and for the future. Whether it’s
managing your emotions in the midst of
exam cancellations and school closures,
working well independently, performing in an interview or dealing
with job rejection, you will need a positive/growth mindset
combined with essential skills to help you adapt and grow. The
worksheets take 20 minutes and will help you to recognise and
develop strategies for staying positive. Complete it on your own
or with the help of a parent or carer.
How can LifeSkills help?
Young people:
Read about Dom’s LifeSkills journey
Find out how completing LifeSkills gave Dom
the confidence and skills he needed to bag
an awesome job.
Parents/carers:
Home learning: employability skills
Access resources for use at home that help
equip your young person with the skills and
confidence to prepare them for work.
2
MEETING CHALLENGES WITH
CONFIDENCE
Self-confidence can help you to see
challenges as opportunities. This activity
is designed to help you identify the feelings
experienced when facing and overcoming
challenges, such as adapting to big
changes or new ways of learning and working, and to recognise
the benefits of tackling challenges in the workplace. Complete
the worksheets independently or with a parent or guardian
(20-25 minutes).
Watch Jameela Jamil’s tips for gaining confidence. Everyone
lacks confidence sometimes, even an actress and radio presenter
who appears perfectly poised whenever she’s on screen
or radio. And signpost this lesson plan to your teacher or parent.
3 UNDERSTANDING
PROACTIVITY
Proactive people make things happen
rather than waiting for them to happen to
them. You might have already experienced
ways to be proactive through work
experience or a job. Check out why
proactivity is important and see an example of this skill in action
in the workplace.
4
RESILIENCE – PUTTING IT
INTO ACTION
Resilience involves being in control of your
emotions and adopting a positive outlook
on life’s ups and downs. Learn how to make
molehills out of mountains and tackle
your problems with confidence. Then test
your skills in the LifeSkills Resilience Boot Camp.
5
WHAT’S YOUR
DIRECTION?
One benefit of lockdown is that we all have
more time to consider our life goals and
how best to approach them. Understanding
our strengths and weaknesses is a big part
of thinking about the direction we want to
take in life. Watch YouTube vlogger Emma Blackery’s video about
discovering her strengths and find out yours via LifeSkill’s Wheel
of Strengths.
