Just like depicted in the Korean movie Old Boy (2003), eating live octopus conveys such a strong image to people. The scene was selected as one of The 10 Most Disgusting Food Scenes in Movies by Moviefone. However, live octopus is delicious delicacy for native Koreans, and it is distinct food culture that worth of trying it.

I still remember when I first encountered with Sannakji, a raw dish consisting of live octopus. Few years ago, my family went on trip to Busan, the biggest port city in Korea, and we visited seafood market. Even though it was late night, I was overwhelmed by the liveliness of the market. Under the bright light of neon signs, street vendors were displaying numerous kinds of seafood. Among all, I was fascinated by a live octopus in the aquarium. I’ve seen many kinds of fishes, but it was my first time to see the live octopus swimming freely in the water. However, my wonder toward the octopus turned into horror when my father told me that it will going to be our dinner.
