20 CHARITY SPECIAL
More than a trend
If you are familiar with Instagram or Twitter, you may have noticed #charitytuesday trending - but
what is it and is it more than just a social media craze?
T
he #charitytuesday hashtag took off in 2009
and was started by LoveBox an organisation
which holds awareness drives for different
charities and decided to establish a particular
memorable date for members of the public to engage
with charitable activities.
Some hashtags seem like nothing more than a way for
social media users to boost their self esteem through likes,
retweets and shares but with a quick browse of the trend,
one will see charities publicising any events, fundraises or
achievements as well as encouraging users to volunteer
or get involved with what they’re doing.
#Charitytuesday has become something of an online
community - those who are new and familiar with the
concept can update themselves on a regular basis on
multiple charities, organisations, foundations and causes.
If we compare it with the annual fundraising events
such as Red Nose Day or Children In Need, this regular
occurrence encourages people to give their time, money
and resource more often than just once a year.
It is also a sign of the times we live in today, as people
consume information on a faster and more regular basis
the instant gratification of seeing new developments
within the charity sector satisfies that need. Along with
Instagram announcing plans to introduce a donate button
on its platform later this year, its evident how modern life
is making an impact on the long time practice of altruism.

who can speed up progress,
and investing in cutting-edge
research.
We believe that medical research can and will deliver life-changing
preventions, treatments and one day, a cure for dementia. Gifts in
memory are a kind and thoughtful way to remember a loved one and
make a vital contribution to ending the fear and heartbreak of dementia.
Please contact us if you would like to request pew envelopes for a
funeral, or to set up an online tribute fund.
