The #1 question that I would like to put out there, when people want to be “Pro American”; saying “yeah, yeah the American flag. Yeah, yeah I’m a proud American. Where do you come from? Go back to your country.” The #1 question that I always want to ask them is, “What would the Native Americans say if they came and saw you? Whether you’re Black, White, Chinese, Latino and all that? So what is it to be an American? So that means, “yeah, I’m great! Because we came to a place, we conquered and we killed everybody; I put my flag down and now I’m an American and I am proud!” strengths? JJL: Uh, I’ll say mine is to never give up. Endurance. Most of all, no fear of anything. Don’t give up and don’t fear anyone or anything. FFM: Okay, what would you consider to be your weaknesses though? JJL: I don’t know, it’s up for people to tell me. (Chuckles) FFM: That’s facts! But the reason I imposed the question, is because I have many friends that are young and they’re tapping into the film Industry. There are a lot of challenges that they face on a day to day basis and there is no one specific challenge but I’d just like to know how you were able to overcome some of the things that you overcame? Like not being able to have the same pay, as some of your Caucasian colleagues. JJL: Well, a few things I’d say is “be aware of where you are at all times. Know that you actually have something to propose, and that you do have some game. Be real with yourself, with what you’ve got. Because unfortunately, we’re dealing with a generation that just wants to make it, without really doing the work. Just because of the publicity they get from Social Media and those things, they think they can just make it. Listen, being an Actor or a Musician or an Artist; you also have to learn. It’s almost like me waking up tomorrow and I say “um, I feel I want to be a doctor; give me the knife and let me go operate on someone.” And it’s like, what have you done for you to believe that you can be a doctor? So the same question applies To Artists and Actors; what have you done for you to believe that you deserve the credit? So you have to do some homework. FFM: That’s great logic! Well, Congratulations on your new movie that you have coming out this month, “Rattlesnakes.” I can’t wait to see it! I know a lot of effort has been placed in creating this movie. I’m just curious to know what you would say are some of your greatest professional AUG-SEP R.indd 59 FFM: So do you feel the same about your weaknesses? JJL: (chuckles) Yeah. That’s why I’m saying, it’s up to people to tell me. Because I don’t know. You know what I mean? (Chuckling) FFM: I typically ask people that question, because I like to hear their responses. I always tell people that; “the same things that make you like me, are the exact same things 30/08/2019 06:50:02
