Are we ready to talk about it now? Is it still too soon? Waiting to discuss how to prevent another incident is nonsensical. Making it a political issue misses the mark. The issue is ensuring the safety and protection of all citizens. This is, after all, the role of government, and the essential component of the social contract we all subscribe to by virtue of agreeing to live in this society. a weapon. We wouldn’t freely hand a weapon to a child. Why are we freely handing weapons to individuals who are not capable of responsibly handling the weapon? Call upon your Representatives to advocate for logical and effective gun control. While ineffective partisan filibustering on this issue seems pervasive in both D.C and Tallahassee, these random acts of violence continue to plague the nation. This can not be our new normal. When will we learn? When is enough, enough? You have a right to protect yourself. I have a right to go to Walmart and shop for back to school supplies in peace. All families should be safe, not just those protected by Secret Service. These mass shootings are a nationwide pandemic that must be eradicated. Our representatives should have meaningful discussions and give careful consideration to background checks; national registration for criminal offenses; training courses; ban on assault rifles; prohibitions on locations where guns can be brought. For example, currently in the state of Florida, municipalities are barred from regulating weapons in parks and at City Halls. Hedges of protection should be considered for certain public and sacred spaces. Mental illness, conflict resolution and anger management are all ancillary issues that we as a nation need to address.
