“At the same time the idea is to change
the mindset of Africa from preventing
Malaria to eradicating it. We believe it can
be eliminated in our lifetime. It has been
done in other parts of the world so there
is no reason why it cannot be done in
Africa.
“While not a lot of people are dying of
malaria, if you take your foot off the pedal
then it comes back and takes long to get
rid of, for example one year of malaria
spreading takes five years to eradicate.
“The campaign has started in
Mozambique under the
auspices of the ministry of
health in that country.
“In today’s age there
should be no-one dying
from the bite of a
mosquito.”
From the 6 to 11 October, the World’s
largest gathering of Malaria experts
came together in Durban.
The 6th Multilateral Initiative on
Malaria (MIM) Pan-African Conference,
subtitled "Moving Towards Malaria
Elimination: Investing in Research and
Control”, saw presentations by leading
scientists on the latest groundbreaking
research on preventing, controlling and
eliminating the disease.
Despite the number of deaths from
malaria having been driven down over
the past decade, there are threats to this
including a resistance by the malaria
parasite to the most effective drugs, and
by mosquitoes to frontline insecticides
(used in long-lasting insecticide-treated
nets and indoor residual spraying.
Add to this that donor funding for
malaria has plateaued, and there is a
