Lupita
Nyong’o
to star in Trevor
Noah’s memoir
adaptation
‘Born a Crime’
Barely a month before the
hubbub surrounding The
Black Panther has cooled
off, Lupita Nyong’o has
once again landed a major
role in Trevor Noah’s ‘Born
a Crime’.
The Kenyan actress
will feature in the film
adaptation of the
comedian’s autobiography
as Trevor’s mother-
Patricia.
The South African
comedian made the
announcement during
one of the episodes of
The Daily Show when he
hosted Lupita. Ms Nyong’o
who had read the book
while on set for Black
Panther loved it instantly
and could not resist the
idea of taking up the
heroic role.
Key in the book is Noah’s
time with his mother, who
at first concealed her son
to keep him safe from the
threat of being taken by
government forces to later
giving everything to him in
order to break a cycle of
poverty and violence.
Noah is producing the
project through his Ark
Angel Productions banner.
Norman Aladjem, Derek
Van Pelt and Sanaz Yamin
of Mainstay Entertainment
are also casting, along with
Nyong’o.
In his book, Born a Crime:
Stories from a South
African Childhood, the
South African author and
comedian narrates his
experience on growing
up with a Black mother
and Swiss father in a
country where interracial
relationships were illegal
and could warrant an
arrest. His mother was
arrested countless times
for seeing his father
Robert, yet the two were
undeterred in raising their
family of mixed races.
Lupita’s task would be
to bring out Patricia’s
experiences in the
apartheid period and the
price she paid for her
family.
Lupita recently played a
major role in the black
super hero film, Black
Panther, a film which
caused a stir in both the
local and international film
scenes. She has also acted
in 12 Years a Slave, Queen
of Katwe, among others.
