Back-to-School Student Safety Remember to stay alert in school zones! Crossing guards use stop signs and hand signals to direct pedestrians and traffic. FRISCO ISD SCHOOL HOURS ELEMENTARY 7:45 AM – 2:55 PM MIDDLE SCHOOL 8:25 AM – 3:35 PM HIGH SCHOOL 9:00 AM – 4:15 PM G etting around Frisco ISD has be- come more of a challenge as the area grows. But don’t let the clock or frustration with traffic compromise stu- dent safety. Every driver on the road plays a role in ensuring children make it to school unharmed – whether they walk, ride their bike or arrive in a car or school bus. Any time students are traveling to and from school activities, but especially for few hours each morning and afternoon, Frisco ISD urges drivers to slow down and be aware and alert in school zones. Keep an eye out for kids, stop for crossing guards and drive carefully near school buses. Put away cell phones. These simple rules of the road are 12 | FOCUS backed by a team of dedicated Frisco ISD employees and police in Frisco, Plano, McKinney and Little Elm. “Parents put their trust in our crossing guards, bus drivers, police and the entire community,” said Doug Becker, director of transportation for FISD. “They expect us to be alert and looking out for their stu- dents. We hope that all drivers plan ahead, exercise patience and allow extra time if needed as the new school year starts. It might mean choosing alternate routes or times for travel.” Frisco ISD works closely with po- lice departments in each city to plan the placement of crossing guards, stop signs and speed zones. FISD hires and shares the cost of the crossing guards with police, who not only monitor school zones, but also provide training and assist with security. Bus drivers are certified in bus safety, CPR and first aid. Teachers and other school employees also help students arrive safely once on campus. The first few days of school can be chaotic as families figure out traffic patterns and rules, but congestion typi- cally improves as confusion clears. Remember to be safe and don’t be late. School starts August 21. n
