Fine Arts Department Receives National Award
On October 14, 2017, the FHS Fine Arts Department received
the prestigious National Performing Arts School of Excellence
award. With the assistance of the Texas UIL, FHS was selected
for our exemplary diverse and award-winning programs. This
recognition is awarded to one high school each fall during the
National Performing Arts Week for the NFHS.
Transformation Starts with Authentic Learning
FHS teachers Melissa Stephenson and Corey Truman are piloting
a US History and English III combined class. The curriculum
seamlessly blends history and English. The class year is broken
into four units: voice and protest, the progression of war, the
American dream, and our past and future. Each unit ends with
a student-led project such as making a change in our school/
community, creating a walk-through war museum, presentations
of their family’s immigration or American dream story, and
finally, where they believe our country is heading based on the
progression of researched social issues. The students have thrived
with the freedom and choice given to them throughout the year.
