Freshers ! My name is Charlie Hextall , and I am the LMSS Treasurer for 2021 / 22 ! I ’ m from St Albans , and this is my 6th year of being in Liverpool , and I have to say you ’ ve all lucked out by coming to this fantastic city ! I remember the nerves and excitement of starting university ( Albeit a long time ago !!) and turning up to the first LMSS event of the year and having the best time . Chloe , Oscar and I alongside our amazing committee want to make sure that your time in Liverpool is the best it can possibly be ! My job as Treasurer is to oversee the finances of the society and make sure that you get the best value for money out of your five years here ! The best way for you to get value for money is to become a member of the LMSS and get money off every event you go too ! I made my money back on my membership within my first year and since then I ’ ve just been saving money whilst having the best time ! With LMSS membership , you get a discount on every LMSS event you go to ( excluding our charity events ), which over 5-years will save you at £ 15 per year if you only go to our amazing dinners and balls ! These memberships will be available to buy online on our website ( Highly recommend you go for the 5-year membership as this is our best deal ) or at freshers faire in September , where you can buy a t-shirt which will act as your ticket to our famous Bus Tour Bar Crawl during freshers week , which is one of the best nights of your time in Liverpool . The sole use of LMSS funds is to make your time at medical school the best it can possibly be , with a wide variety of events that cater to everyone ! Throwing yourself into everything is something I can highly recommend ! Before I started , I had never got involved in things like the fab medics ’ performing arts society Artefacts , but now being part of the backstage team for shows every year are in my top 5 things to be part of whilst you are here ! Getting involved in our amazing sports teams is a great way to make friends and have an amazing time ! Some of my medical school highlights have come from playing for our rugby team ! We also have amazing football , hockey , squash , netball , tennis and cricket teams so there is something for everyone sporty ! Don ’ t forget to come to our amazing BLS events ( Big LMSS Socials ) where you can pelt me with copper coins ( as per tradition !) as well as having loads of laughs with comedy nights and freshers ’ games ! The LMSS is something that stays with you throughout your career as well ! We are lucky to have over 1000 active student members of our society and a massive number of alumni who work in the local area ! We must be doing something right when we have consultants still talking about the LMSS ! We foster great links between the years , and I regularly received teaching from my LMSS mentor and through the rugby team . We also work closely with the academic medical societies like Surgical Scousers to run events like our case presentation evening ( so we ’ re not just a partying society !) during which you can present your cases to a panel of surgeons ! The friends I ’ ve made through the LMSS are my best mates ! Mr Secretary Oscar and I successfully ran a national 3 peaks challenge as LMSS charity reps to raise money for Claire House Children ’ s Hospice which was an amazing experience ! We also have a blast every year taking part in Grand Round , which is a highlight of the calendar and caps off a whirlwind first term ! Once you take part in it you will know just how amazing it is ! We also give you loads of opportunities to dress to the 9 ’ s with your best buds which will make all your mates from halls and home extremely jealous !!
We are a really welcoming bunch , and the only thing you will need to bring with you is a DBS attitude .
