“Scrubs are a great way
to get your lap times
down, but they are also
a lot of fun – I think
it’s something every
confident racer should
try.” - Luke
Before you start to learn
how to scrub, find a
nice small jump that you
are comfortable on and
can clear with ease. Ski
jumps can be good to
learn or practice on as
there is no knuckle to
clear, so if you scrub
too much speed on your
first go you won’t case it
on the landing.
The scrub is definitely
a technique that
you can learn in
stages – start small
and get your scrubs
bigger and bigger as
your confidence and
technique improve.

How To Scrub
with Lu
ke Hawkins
Stage 1: As you approach the
jump you’re about to scrub you
need to be carrying more speed
than you need to clear the jump.
Figuring out exactly how much
speed comes down to practice,
the more scrubs you do, the
more accurate your approach
speed will become.
Stage 2: Don’t go off the jump
straight. Pick a line so you’re
going up the face of the jump on
a very slight angle (heading left
if you’re scrubbing right and vice
versa). This will help initiate the
arc motion your back wheel will
be making throughout the scrub.
Remember, although your line
points off at an angle, you should
land directly ahead of where you
took off.
