particular tricks, or corner speed
for example, that really helps me
- instead of just going out and
riding with no plans. Last but not
least is to keep that endurance
up and try to expand on it for
Speed & Style.
You definitely have a strong
work ethic and put in the work,
no doubt. A lot of FMX guys
tend to have the more relaxed
approach of just going with
the flow and not really working
with a plan. Is there any part
of this that may be a love-hate
relationship - you love riding but
don’t like training?
You know what… I’d say it’s all
love man, I love what I do. As far
as crashes and getting hurt, you
kind of just accept that. Whether
you know it or not, you sign up
for injuries by wanting to ride a
dirt bike. Every time you start that
bike up you’re signing that waiver.
I don’t hate it at all, sometimes it
is frustrating though, especially
when you’re not winning or you’re
hurt, but freestyle is what’s given
me my life, it’s why I’m getting to

do this interview, it’s how I bought
my house, my cars, van, bike and
it’s supported my family for a long
time. I think this is the greatest
sport in the world and I love it.
I’ll be doing this long after I quit
competing, you know we’ll just be
riding because it’s what we do.
Shoot, we might even be riding
more past the competition leg of
our careers. So yeah, I’m a dirt
biker and this is what I do!
Speaking of life after FMX
careers, you’re now in the fifth
year of running Deft Family,
what are your goals for the
company?
My goals for Deft Family are
basically to keep doing what
we’re doing and grow it as much
as we can. We were a few dirt
bikers that started a business
and the whole time we have
put our hearts and souls into
it working. It’s working, we’re
running a business and it’s
exciting. I’m hoping that five, ten
years down the line we’re a crew
of guys running a business that
is doing good. Deft Family is a
good way to keep me cemented
in the industry even when I’m
not riding. I really want to have
a motocross company and be
riding motocross, tied in with
the industry, staying in the sport
forever whether I’m competing or
not. T
