Rick and Morty started as a parody of Back to
The Future called Doc and Marthi, soon this
independent animated short film called the
attention of Adult Swim, so they decide to
produce the idea; However, they changed it a
lot. Then Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon
created Rick and Morty without putting too
much thought on it, actually, they usually get
their ideas from the daily things that happen in
their lives or happened before, also they
usually mention other TVs shows and movies. In fact, in some of the chapter you can find
reference to Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters, Freddy Kruger and famous directors and writers like
David Cronenberg and other movies and bands.
Hidden behind all the jokes and the black humor there is a philosophical base that makes you
stop laughing with Ricks farts and start thinking about life. The first philosophical base is,
Cosmic Pessimism. In a few words the Cosmic Pessimism means that the universe is so big
and diverse compared with humanity and the Earth, that next to the universe, our life and
things we give meaning to are meaningless. One day we can disappear, we can die, we can
destroy The Earth and it will mean nothing at all because out there, there are infinite number of
possible planets like Earth with infinite kind of lives. In the words of Morty in the episode 8 -
seasons 1. “nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody is going to die,
come and watch tv”.
