PR E PA R ATORY S C HO OL Swimming for their Quarter Everyone present on the day should be very proud of the efforts of the Preparatory School students at our recent Swimming Carnivals. Held on the same day, the Dolphin and Quarter carnivals were a fantastic display of swimming prowess and nerves of steel! First up was the Dolphin Carnival for students in Years 1, 2 and 3. Little bodies, new to swimming with or without a flotation aid, swam fearlessly from one side of the pool to the other. They were only helped ‘a little bit’ by the Sports Monitors or staff who were always just an arm’s length away. These 12 metre races then gave way to the 25 metre races and there were some very excited swimmers who had only swum across the pool last year to find out this year how much their swimming skills had improved. Congratulations to all swimmers. Once the Year 1 – 3 students had finished, the Quarter Carnival for Year 4 – 6 swimmers got underway and students previously seeded in time trials in the weeks before the carnival swam against others in their year group, graded according to their ability. The Carnival started with the gruelling Individual Medley in which a new record was set by Emma Pittman (Year 6, West) and was followed by races in Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle and Butterfly. New records were set in all four strokes. Congratulations to these very talented and hardworking swimmers. Once the individual races had been completed, the year group relays started and sent the crowds into a cheering frenzy. Finally, with two wins and a second across all three relays, West took home the relay trophy, which contributed significantly to its overall score, and were awarded the Champion Quarter trophy at the final presentation. Thank you to FOPS for keeping everybody fed and hydrated and to the Guildford Kalamunda District Swimming Club for the loan of the Dolphin Timing System. As always, we celebrated the winners, the courageous finishers, the cheering parents and the hardworking staff who encouraged and supported our amazing Year 1 - 6 swimmers.
