The 2017 Guildford Grammar School Athletics season was once again a building time with steady improvements being made . Following the success of the 2016 program , we again offered six Sunday morning sessions at the WA Athletics Stadium in Mt Claremont prior to the season proper . This valuable opportunity for the students allowed them to get in the athletics mindset and refine their technique .
The Term 3 athletics season ran for four weeks and during that time the students were given the opportunity to attend training sessions every afternoon at school . Head Coach , Kylie Wheeler and other specialist coaches ; Phill Langley , Rudy Kocics , Ebony Talbert , Tongchai Quartermaine , Sam Shambrook ( SG 08-12 ) and Callum Smith ( Wb 09-14 ) were able to assist the students with their athletics development when they committed to these trainings . The dedication and commitment from a range of students was commendable and it was this attitude and effort that saw us perform consistently at both the Quads and PSA Athletics events .
Quads were held on Friday 1 September at the WA Athletics Stadium with Guildford , Scotch , Wesley and Christ Church battling it out for the Lynn Shield . This was a great opportunity for the students to size up their competition before the PSA Carnival the following week . Our athletes were fantastic on the day and Guildford came away with a third placing ahead of Wesley .
and consistently demonstrated an excellent attitude toward training and competition .
Team Captain Reilly Oliver ( 12Fr ) and Vice- Captain Nicholas MacLachlan ( 12Wb ) are to be congratulated for their outstanding leadership . They were proactive and encouraging throughout the entirety of the season , setting a high standard and leading by example . Having both been involved in GGS athletics for six years , Reilly and Nic have been great ambassadors and role models throughout their time and made valuable contributions to the sport .
The day ended with Guildford placing 7th overall , edging closer again to Wesley who finished in 6th place . Guildford ’ s point score this year was an achievement in itself , and for the first time in seven years we attained over 1000 points . Looking ahead to the 2018 season , as a positive athletics culture continues to develop within the school , we are determined to maintain the steady improvement trend shown over the last couple of years .
