Diary of the Canberra tour
A group of Year 6 Preparatory School students embarked on an adventure over the September school holidays , taking part in the Canberra Tour , accompanied by Mr Wight , Mrs Cooper , Mrs Ray and Nurse Christine . We hope you enjoy their diary of the tour !
23 September We are here and getting tucked in for the first night . The plane trip was easy and everyone has settled in . Alarms are set , teeth are brushed and I can hear laughter coming from every room . More to follow as we immerse ourselves in Canberra tomorrow morning . – Mr Wight
24 September Wow ! What an amazing first day ! It started with a cooked breakfast , including pancakes . Dinner will be soon . The students ’ knowledge at the Exhibition Centre was impressive . We learnt about how Canberra was named . From there we enjoyed a cycle around Lake Burley Griffin , with only a few minor injuries and no-one fell in the lake ! Ryan chose to ride tandem with Nurse Christine . The weather has been just gorgeous and we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the park . As we were close to the Old Parliament House we decided to walk to the Aboriginal Embassy ( Tent Embassy .) We learnt about the fire of justice which has been burning for 44 years . Then it was up to Mt Ainslie for an amazing view of Canberra . From there we went to Cockington Green , enjoyed a mini train ride and the students were delighted to start spending their money ! We all tried our hand at ice skating after dinner . – Mrs Ray , Mrs Cooper , Mr Wight and Nurse Christine
25 September Wow – that was interesting ! Our Year 6 students would like you all to know some relevant data from last night . Collectively there were 45 wipeouts , four snowballs made , one wipeout by Nurse Christine , seven failed attempts at a “ fancy ” ice skating manoeuvre , and a massive 79 laps of the rink completed by all participants . Now obviously there were some who chose to collect data , write encouraging signs and laugh hilariously at the antics on the ice . They may have been the wiser ones .
A group is off this morning at 7.00am to climb the local “ mountain ” followed by breakfast at 7.30 . Then we are off on a day of visits to the National Archives and museums . As soon as the students take a break from activities we will get them writing some blog posts as well . Type soon ! – Mr Wight
26 September We had a wonderful day yesterday as we started at the National Archives and then the National Gallery ( amazing !). After lunch and a visit to the National Museum we had an informative stop at the National Dinosaur Museum . We have many enthusiastic paleontologists in the group . The highlight of the day for many was the go karting after dinner . We had some epic races , and a warning to never let your kids touch your cars ! We just had an awesome breakfast and are about to hop on the bus for the AIS . – Mr Wight
