After returning to the game following World War II, in 1949 Ben Hogan had a head-on
collision with a Greyhound bus that threatened not only his career, but his life.
Hogan had to learn to walk again, but in 1953 completed what many say is one of the
greatest comebacks in all of sports. That year Hogan won the Triple Crown or Grand Slam,
taking top honors at the Masters, the PGA Championship and the British Open.
It was Hogan’s first and last appearance at the British Open. Hogan wasn’t too thrilled by
the impenetrable rough.
“I’ve got a lawn mower back in Texas, I’ll send it over,” Hogan famously said after winning
the tournament. Hogan retired with 68 career wins in 1971. He died at 84 in 1997.
