Tracks of my Keele years | 17
“ Come on Eileen – Dexy ’ s Midnight Runners .
It was played in the SU at the end of the evening . I would look out of the windows of the ballroom and the chip van would just be arriving for chips and gravy or chips and curry sauce - which I ’ d never had before !”
Sarah Matthews ( née Smithers )
English & Law , Class of 1987
“ Ride on Time by Black Box .
Whenever I hear this song I ’ m transported back to my final year in 1990 and some rather ungainly singing and dancing which may or may not have involved table tops . This was with my group of friends - mentioning no names Suzanne - who I still meet up with today .”
Sarah-Jane Jennings
English & History , Class of 1990
“ I was resident in Hawthorns from 1976 to 1979 . While we often had parties and discos in the ‘ Thorns refectory building , we had a one-off performance in the 1978 Christmas term when the Troggs played live and performed their greatest hit Wild Thing . An unforgettable night with lead singer Reg Presley on top form . Hearing the song always brings back great memories of Keele and of Hawthorns in particular .”
Paul Ramsden
Geology & Mathematics , Class of 1979
“ When I arrived in Keele as a Frankfurt exchange student in the fall of 1988 , I was housed in Horwood Hall . My neighbour was an energetic young Englishman and he liked to sing along when he heard music . Especially the chorus , where he got very loud : “ But I Still Haven ’ t Found What I ’ m Looking For ”. The U2 album The Joshua Tree , from which the song was , had come out in 1987 , the year before . I loved it and still love it decades later . But on this song , I hear not only Bono , but also my fellow student from Keele . I hope he ’ s doing well and has found what he was looking for by now .”
Prof . Dr Miloš Vec
Study Abroad , Class of 1989
“ 1994 when D : REAM played at Keele and Things Can Only Get Better was number 1 in the charts .
I feel like that song came full circle with me at Keele when in 1997 just before I graduated , Labour got into government and they used it as part of their campaign . That time I remember standing in the pizza place on campus and watching the news on TV as the votes were coming in and it was clear there was going to be a change in government . “
Emma Wilkinson ( née Swift ) Biology & Environmental Management , Class of 1997
“ Never Forget by Take That .
Takes me right back to Friday nights in the Ballroom . Amazing times 1994-1997 ”
Sue Simmons ( née Kenny ) International Relations , Class of 1997
