Six Fordham Prep alumni competed in the Olympic Trials. Commander Miller ’88 Retires from Coast Guard Commander Miller currently served as the Chief of Prevention for Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia, PA. There he oversaw a highly talented workforce of 89 Active Duty, Reserve, and Civilian personnel at Sector, Marine Safety Detachment Lewes, DE, and Aid to Navigation Teams Philadelphia, PA and Cape May, NJ, to manage and execute the Coast Guard Prevention activities across the three states surrounding the Delaware River and Bay to prevent loss of life and property. He was always about preventing loss of life. Previously, Dennis was assigned to U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, where he served as a Traveling Marine Inspector in the Prevention Directorate as well as the Sector Program sponsor for the Office of Shore Forces in the Capabilities Directorate. He also developed the Coast Guard’s Feeder Port Audit Program, the Marine Safety Mission Support Committee, made improvements to the Marine Safety Insignia, and supervised the Towing Vessel National Center of Expertise. Also, during his Coast Guard Headquarters tour, he was deployed to the Deepwater Horizon MC252 Oil Spill Response in 2010 and acted as the Vessel Decontamination Lead for more than 3000 vessels. He said, “it was easy.” A native of the Bronx, NY, Dennis graduated from Fordham Preparatory School in 1988 and SUNY Maritime College in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Facility Engineering and a Third Assistant Engineer Merchant Marine License. He joined the Coast Guard Reserve in 1992 and entered into active duty upon commissioning. He later received the Turek Award and Department of Homeland Security Award for Excellence. Much later, Dennis earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Troy University and also became a Certified and Registered Quality Auditor with IRCA in London, UK. Dennis is a “double-ended” Senior Marine Inspector qualified in 16 vessel types. He is at his very heart a Marine Safety Officer, although he has been known to dabble in training, auditing, planning, oil spill response, budgeting, and Search and Rescue. His previous assignments include a tour at Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach as the Chief of Inspections where he influenced national policy on Inert Gas Systems and implemented the Transport Workers Identification Credential, Training Center Yorktown as an Instructor and Marine Inspector Course Administrator where he authored and implemented much of the initial vessel security course material, Marine Safety Office Houston-Galveston as the Assistant Chief of the Domestic Branch and Assistant Senior Investigating Officer where he ate far too many crawfish and was almost attacked by alligators, but also detained a record 30 vessels in 45 days, and started at Marine Inspection Office New York (later Activities New York) as a Marine Inspector where he stayed out of trouble (but still managed to find trouble) for the majority of his entire tour. Commander Miller is the recipient of four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and several other personal and unit awards. He has four children: Wesley Ephraim, Julius Alexander, Vera and Wyndii, and is married to his wonderful wife Mistyann, who is, both inside and out, the most beautiful woman in the world and his best friend. After retirement on July 11, 2016, he plans on staying in the Philadelphia area to work in the maritime sector. WINT ER 2017 | 31
