“ At the prep, when the going gets tough, the love gets stronger.” This was one among hundreds of messages from alumni displayed on the screens in the lobby and Commons on February 26th, sent in support of the prep community following the tragic deaths of two sophomores. Over these past months, the love of our alumni community has been expressed in countless ways. many changed their Facebook profile to the prep seal or the fighting ram, and twitter posts ended with # WeAreFordhamprep. All of these expressions of support and solidarity helped to lift the spirits of our students, faculty and staff, and they reminded us all of the strength of the Fordham prep community. As we continue to hold the Kelly and Colmenares families close in prayer, the support of our alumni is a reminder of god’ s unfailing presence and love in these difficult times.
At the homecoming for emmaus 266, i was reminded that for many prep students this strong sense of community and of god’ s love is often most profoundly experienced through their junior year emmaus retreat. As for the disciples on the road to emmaus, our students come to recognize the presence of Christ during this three-day experience through the love they share with one another and through the words expressed by families and friends in the emmaus palancas. The bonds of friendship and brotherhood are strengthened through emmaus and the many other retreat experiences in their time at the prep.
Those bonds of brotherhood are also forged each day in the classroom and on the court, field and stage. in the classroom, new technologies have enabled greater collaboration among students and, in fact, greater interaction with teachers through online resources. Our teams, clubs and activities continue to be a source of community and comradery as they challenge students to grow outside the classroom in their commitment to one another through teamwork and dedication to a shared mission.
Despite the challenges our community has faced these past months, the love in the prep community is perhaps stronger than ever. it is a reminder of the paschal mystery we celebrate at easter – that love will conquer hatred, light will dispel darkness, hope will replace despair, and life will triumph over death.
We thank our alumni and friends of Fordham prep for being such a source of god’ s grace in our lives these past months and assure you of our prayers for you and your family during the easter season.
