Summer Immersion Trips
Again this summer, Prep students and faculty lived the call to
be “Men and Women for Others” through our Christian Service
Immersion program. In Ecuador, they worked with families and
children at the Working Boys Center, a technical school founded
by Fr. John Halligan, SJ, Prep Class of 1947. In Camden, New
Jersey, students and faculty worked in a variety of ministries with
the Romero Center and were challenged to reflect on how they
might lead lives committed to promoting justice. In Tennessee,
they partnered with Appalachia Habitat for Humanity to build
homes for three special families. Those families included a
young family of four. The father, Tyler, works at the local
WalMart while his wife Lakisha stays at home to care for their
1 and 6-year-old daughters Elise and Kinley. Their current rental
home has a basement that constantly holds water which has
caused the floors to buckle in the children’s bedrooms from the
moisture. There is also black mold on the ceilings and walls in
the bedrooms and bathroom. The couple is thrilled to have a
safe, decent home for their children thanks to the efforts of
Fordham Prep and Habitat for Humanity. The students who
participated in these trips this summer raised over $250,000 to
fund the building of these homes and support the work of the
Romero Center and the Working Boys Center.
This summer, Fordham Prep staff and students volunteer to travel
to Camden, NJ, the Appalachia Mountain Region of Tennessee, and
Quito, Ecuador to live in community and to provide material
assistance to residents in need. They are performing much-needed
building and home repairs for people who are not able to do or afford
the work.
