He ’ d come to work on Saturdays a little bit and I ’ d make him sweep and clean . He was around 13 – 14 years old when he would walk from the Prep to Mike ’ s Deli . He enjoyed the neighborhood . And he ’ d bring friends . They ’ d walk here , I ’ d feed them and then drive them home afterwards . The Bronx was the treasured part of the relationship with my son , and so they ’ d walk here with him . This was their backyard . In the end , a relationship with the neighborhood helps all the businesses here , not just mine . Students realize that in their backyard are famous little businesses like mine , that are family-run for almost 100 years or more . And it ’ s amazing that we still exist , because without the right customers you can ’ t .

Q : all the changes and these new products and things you ’ ve come up with in response to the changing times , we have to ask : what is your favorite sandwich ? What is your favorite dish that you create right now ?
A :
My favorite hands-down classic is the
Michelangelo . We call it that because it is a work of art . With prosciutto , fresh basil on it , maybe the roast pepper or tomato depending on the season , that ’ s my favorite even when I travel . I get it to go to travel — wrapped it up and it goes in my knapsack , for my plane ride . It ’ s simplicity and it feels like Italy .
