Hushe was CAI’ s second school. It sits in the center of a small village at the end of the road.
CAI completed construction of Hushe Primary School in 1998.“ Before that, there was no school in Hushe,” Nazir said.“ Then the government built four classrooms in another building. And every year the enrollment of students increases.”
The school was turned over to the government, but CAI continues to support the teachers and 195 students, filling in gaps where government support falls short.
One of those teachers is Khadim Ali, a Hushe School graduate who completed high school in Khapalu, the regional center 37 miles [ but a day-long jeep ride on bad roads ] to the south, then got his teaching certification and returned to the village.
“ Education is very important for everyone, especially those who live in far areas, far from cities,” said Ali, now a teacher in Hushe.“ There is low literacy and I want all the people to be educated.”
The hunger for education is also fed by a declining local economy and exposure to literate westerners.
