ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB
First established in 1875, Newtown AFC plays their home games
at Latham Park in Powys and their first team currently competes in
the Welsh Premier League. They are one of only two clubs that can
claim unbroken membership in the league and were also one of the
founder members of the Football Association of Wales.
This season the club has made a positive start to their league
campaign, putting together a record of seven wins, four draws
and four defeats from their fifteen matches. This sees them
sitting in the top-half of the table with twenty-five points on the
board, just five behind the league leaders.
They will now be looking to put together a good run of
results in order to push on up the table. As long as they are able
to keep their current group of players together they should be in
with a chance of mounting a serious title challenge.
One of the highlights of the team’s performances so far this
season has been the attacking brand of football that they have
been able to produce. This has been reflected by the fact that
they have found the back of the net twenty-eight times at a rate
of nearly two per game.
This will certainly have meant that any supporters attending
their matches will have been well entertained and should
encourage more of the local community to get behind the side in
the future. This in turn has the potential to provide them with a
valuable source of additional revenue.
Newtown AFC is not a club to focus solely upon their senior
section and this is reflected by the fact that they also have an
academy in place. This part of the club looks to provide young
players from the local community with an opportunity to play
the game in a safe and enjoyable environment.
It is important for any club looking to be successful over a
sustained period of time to be able to produce their own talent
and this is an area they appear to have covered. It will certainly
be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress over the
coming years.
There is much to admire about the fine set up that Newtown
AFC currently has in place and this is being reflected in the
results they are achieving on the field. Hopefully they will be
able to continue in the same manner for many years to come.
