FOOTBALL CLUB
B
arry Town United Ladies
FC is club that plays a vital
role in their community by
providing people with an opportunity to
get involved in the game. Their progress
in recent times has been very impressive
and we recently caught up with Club
Chairman Luke Williams to find out
more.
Involvement
He told us, “Initially, I helped to form
the Vale Ladies and Girls Football Club
back in 2012 and this summer we decided
to merge with local Welsh League club
Barry Town United to help us become
more sustainable and provide first class
facilities for our members.
The club started out four years ago
offering free taster sessions in local
schools for girls, as well as creating and
managing a local schools league at both
primary and secondary age groups. In just
a four year period the club has become the
18 Issue 65
largest female setup in Wales with around
200 active players from ages 7 to senior
ladies. We wanted to offer something
different and really drive the female game
in the local area and the merge with Barry
Town will now help us take the club to
the next level as our players develop and
move through our pathway.”
The Role
“Being an active coach as well as a
chair sometimes causes issues as often
I have to make decisions for the greater
good of the club when that can potentially
impact on my own team. Also dealing
with expectations can be a challenge with
both parents and players as on occasions
this can be unrealistic.
We like to think we offer an excellent
learning environment for our players and
we are dedicated to developing the girls
to become the best they can possibly be
both on the pitch and socially. The most
rewarding aspects of my role is seeing the
club develop to a higher level within the
football pyramid.
In addition, players going on to
represent the regional and national teams
is a fantastic advert for the work we do
as a club. In the last year, 14 players have
gone onto regional and national honours
at junior level which is fantastic for our
future.”
Present
“Given the recent merge to Barry
Town, there is real energy and excitement
around the club at the moment,
