Moreton
Rangers
FOOTBALL CLUB
Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds in the town of Moreton in Marsh you
will find the home of Moreton Rangers FC at their London Road Ground.
The club was born from the ashes of Moreton Town who went form Hellenic
League Champions to going bust in the early 1990’s when they got into
financial trouble. The Town team was notable for seeing the final playing
days of Liverpool legend and Match of the Day pundit Mark Lawrenson.
Starting in 1997 with an under 7
team the new club soon went from
strength to strength with the junior
section leading to an adult team and
the award of FA Charter Standard
Development Club status.
Current Chairman Paul Luker
who has been involved from those
early days as a coach of his son’s
junior team has held most roles at
the club. “I started as a keen dad
coaching my son but soon took
my coaching badges to become the
youth development officer, colt’s
30 Issue 86
team coach and a youth referee
before becoming vice chairman and
then chairman”.
The Club has had its ups and
downs over the years, having
won the Cheltenham League First
Division in 2009 and being poised
to be promoted the club’s changing
rooms were burnt down. A massive
fundraising effort was made to
raise £80,000 and players, parents
and local trades people all pulled
together to beat the deadline to
rebuild them. The support we had
from the location community was
awesome and showed the great link
between the club and the town.
For ten years the first team was
coached by Gary Barnett. Gary who
had a professional career notably
at Oxford Utd and Fulham before
becoming a manager leading Barry
Town to three League of Wales’s
titles and into Europe. The Liverpool
connection comes up again as he
went on to become assistant to Jan
Molby at Kidderminster Harriers.
