Winter Southern Style
Jackson, Mississippi
T
he South is famous for its delicious cuisine – drawn from
tables around the world and
interpreted by culinary masters with
a southern flair. But when it comes to
down-home, mouthwatering southern cooking, few cities do it up like
Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson’s more
than 300 restaurants serve up a heaping helping of tradition and flavor
with each dish. Many of these restaurants provide not only good eats, but
also rich, varied histories, creating experiences that are likely to stir your
soul as well as your appetite!
Several blocks from the Historic
Farish Street District, sits a long-time
staple of the downtown Jackson
foodie and music scene, Hal & Mal’s
restaurant. Recently featured on the
Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food program, Hal & Mal’s is the place for live
music, entertainment and southern
fare. The bar and restaurant have
been bringing blues, jazz and country bands to Jackson for more than
25 years. The bar keeps regional craft
beers on draft. From casual diners
to people attending a black tie affair,
Hal & Mal’s has a “come one, come all”
motto or as they say in New Orleans,
laissez-faire environment.
Centrally located in the downtown
area of Jackson is a great restaurant
located in the Old Capitol Inn. Famous
Chef Merrill Bruce Cain delights restaurant guests with at home southern
style food with a sophisticated flair.
The Old Capitol Inn is cozy and beautiful with a large wall of windows
overlooking a garden area filled with
fountains and blooming flowers. The
superb quality of food and service
at the restaurant is equally matched
in the connected bed and breakfast.
Styles of décor in the guest rooms vary
with themes of famous Mississippians, such as Elvis Presley and William
Faulkner and are complimented by
styles such as Leflore County and
Pickens Pickets. This is Jackson’s
only designer boutique hotel and it is
a wonderful place to escape and enjoy
all things Mississippi.
Within Jackson there is a wonderful, historic district known as
Fondren, ideal for those who want
to park the car and enjoy many
things within a walking distance.
