BIRMINGHAM
® BLACK DIAMOND FOLK SONG CLUB
The Globe pub, corner of Manchester Street & Blews Street,
Birmingham.
• Fri, 8.30pm (advert on right)
The Black Diamond Folk Club began its FIFTIETH YEAR (!!!!)
with a visit by Nancy Kerr and James Fagan (30 August). Nancy led
confidently on the fiddle, singing many of her own songs, and James kept
accurate pace on the guitar, though he also did some singing. One fine
song was that old favourite: Annie dear, don’t wait for me.
Martin Wyndham-Read (20 September) hooked in the audience with
the opening lines of his first song: As I was a walking to Birmingham Fair,
I spied pretty Nancy a-combing her hair. Next came: I drew my ship into
the harbour. From then on, it was plain sailing.
Geoff Higginbottom (4 October) delivered a cracking evening of
entertainment. ‘The Voice’ treated his audience to a varied repertoire
of songs interspersed with some very funny repartee. He had everyone
joining in with favourite passages including sad lines about the vanished
past, typified by: And the last train to Fleetwood has gone.
The room was packed for a visit by some members of the Stream of
Sound youth choir (1 November) and their musical director Caroline
Price. Of these, only three were old enough to have been present on the
choir’s first visit. They sang some popular numbers including Chicken on
a Raft and the Prickle-Eyed Bush, but their most outstanding song was an
African one, Ga-Gona, sung and delivered in that unmistakably enthusiastic
African way.
A few days away made me miss a visit by Janet Russell (8 October), but
I was there for Peter and Barbara Snape (15 October). The Lancashire
flavour of their songs was at its funniest with: John Willey’s performing
newt. What a belter! What a dancer!
* Following the mid-November closure of the Globe, the club relocated
temporarily to the Lamp Tavern in Highgate. Check the website to find
the location.
