Commercial
Fishing
Commercial fishing provides an important food source which
supports the economy of this area of Michigan. Not everyone
can go fishing or wants to go fishing. But many people still like
to eat fish. Commercial fishing helps provide fish, like walleye
or whitefish, to restaurants and grocery stores.
Commercial fishing can generate valuable jobs and money for
people in this region.
How much money is generated by commercial fishing? For
example, in 2008, the landed (dockside) value of Great Lakes
fish was estimated at $16.6 million dollars. The retail value
(bought in the the store by us) may be as much as five times
higher due to the work involved processing, transporting, and
selling the fish.
Lake Huron provides the largest amount of lake whitefish in all
of the Great Lakes, producing 50% of all the whitefish caught
in all five lakes.
