Silver Carp
Habitat and Diet:
The Silver carp is a native of China, but was introduced into
the United States in 1970 to help control algae growth in water
treatment facilities.
Silver carp, like their Bighead cousins, are powerful filter
feeders. They do not have stomachs and feed almost
constantly, mostly on zooplankton.
Relationship to humans:
In the United States the Silver carp is considered an
undesirable invasive fish. Although, Silver carp are also
popular targets for bowfishermen; they are shot both in the
water and in the air. Boats are used to scare the fish and get
them to jump, and the fish are shot when they are in the air.
Fun/Unusual fact:
The silver carp is also called the flying carp for its tendency to
leap from the water when startled. They can grow to over 60
pounds, and can leap 10 feet in the air.
