Bighead Carp Habitat and Diet: Native to China, Bighead carp are found in fresh water areas, especially lakes and rivers. This species is known to be very adaptable and can survive in many different freshwater environments all over the world. Bighead carp are very powerful filter feeders, meaning that they consume huge amounts of zooplankton and phytoplankton. They are capable of eating 40% of their body weight daily, and can grow to over 100 lbs! Relationship to humans: Although highly-valued in some countries as food, the Bighead carp is considered a highly destructive invasive species in the United States.
