Brook Trout
Habitat and Diet:
A member of the salmon family, the brook trout inhabits both
large and small lakes, rivers, streams, creeks, and ponds. They
prefer cool, clear waters that are very pure.
Brook trout like to eat all kinds of insects, crayfish, frogs,
smaller fish, and even mammals like moles and voles.
Relationship to humans:
The brook trout is a popular game fish with anglers,
particularly fly fishermen. Brook trout are also commercially
raised in large numbers for food production.
Fun/Unusual fact:
Because Brook trout require cool, clear, spring-fed streams and
pools, scientist use brook trout to test for water purity in areas
that may be prone to pollution.
