Habitat and Diet:
The freshwater drum prefers clear water, but it can also live in
murky water. They prefer the bottom to be clean sand or
gravel.
The the freshwater drum eats mainly insect larvae and
mussels, as well as small fish.
Relationship to humans:
Freshwater drum are fished by more and more anglers because
they are very plentiful, are active feeders in both hot and cold
weather, and are good to eat.
Fun/Unusual fact:
The mature male freshwater drum makes a "grunting" noise.
This noise comes from a special set of muscles within the body
cavity that vibrate against the swim bladder.
