Bluegill
Habitat and Diet
Bluegills like to hide in and around old tree stumps, under dock,
in rock crevasses, and take shelter in heavy vegetation. They are
at home in either shallow or deep water and will alternate
between the two, depending on the season.
Bluegills like to feed on insect larvae, like mayflies and
dragonflies, but also eat small crayfish, insects, and other small
fish. Bluegills not only eat, but are also eaten by larger fish like
large mouth bass, pike, walleye and catfish.
Relationship to humans:
Bluegills are popular pan-fish, caught with live bait such as
worms, crickets, and grasshoppers. Bluegills are a very bold fish,
even though they are so small, and many have no fear of
humans!
Fun/Unusual fact:
During summer months, bluegills generally consume 35 percent
of their body weight each week!
