How to Create a Selection in Photoshop

How to Create a Selection in Photoshop

Joyce Burns
There are many different tools you can use to make a selection in Photoshop . Which tool and the settings you give to that tool are determined by what you want to accomplish . With my photo of the old car and Christmas wreath I wanted to make the photo look old with the look of hand coloring on the wreath . I could have made the whole photo black and white and then I could have gone in with Photoshop paint brushes to paint color back on the wreath . However , I already had good color on the wreath so I thought that I would just tweak it . Here are the steps and some screen shots to show you how I did it . 1 . Choose Magnetic Tool -‐ hold the button down and you should get the Magnetic Tool as a choice .
2 . You will have a little triangle lasso . Click your mouse on the edge of the wreath and while holding down your mouse button click every now and then around the wreath as you need , to keep the line where you want it . Get to where you started and double click . You have made your selection 3 . Go to your tool bar at the top and click on Select and then click on Inverse from the drop down menu . 4 . Go to your tool bar at the top and click on Image then choose Adjustments from the drop down menu then choose Hue / Saturation from the pop -‐ up screen . Drag the slider for Saturation left until you are happy . 5 . Repeat step 3 . So that now you have the wreath selected . 6 . Go to your tool bar at the top and click on Image then choose Adjustments from the drop down menu then choose Color Balance move the slider towards green until you are happy . It should not bother the red on the wreath that much . 7 . Go to your tool bar at the top and click on Select and then Deselect . You are done .
I have drawn a few arrows to show you some of the tools I used .
