A portrait is defined as a likeness of a person. But, the word in general use has deeper connotations. You are not only creating a portrait, but also creating good lighting for the subject, good posing and good print quality. You are capturing a person ' s physical likeness, mannerism, reaction, expression, and body language.
This takes skill and an understanding of human nature. It almost always requires engaging the subject in conversation and finding a suitable topic that will grab her or his interest and evoke a reaction. By the way regarding reactions I remember one time my subject had just sat down under the lights in the camera room, I was talking to him while adjusting my lights and setting the pose and I walked back to my camera to double check my lighting and pose and as part of the conversation I told him he looked like a millionaire( because of the pose he was in) and he came back at me and said he was a millionaire- Wow I was floored don ' t know what I was going to say next! Anyhow building a rapport with the subject is important, whether a four year-year old child or a ninety year old person.
