Portable media players are small portable electronic devices that are usually designed to be brought around with you and are capable of storing and playing music (Although many of them are now capable of playing other forms of digital media such as images and movies.).

They are often referred to as “mp3 players” (As mp3 is one of the most common file formats for music files) even though many of them are able to play numerous other file formats such as WMA and WAV files. They also commonly have other features such as internet connection and being able to connect to the radio. The most widely known Digital Audio Players are the different models of iPOD by Apple such as the iPOD Nano and the iPOD Shuffle.

Although there are many devices such as cell phones and tablets that can also serve the functions a portable media player can, they cannot be considered portable media players because these are not their primary functions.
