HOLIDAYS AT MOUNT VERNON
SIDESADDLE EXHIBITION , 1690–1935
Late November – December 31, 2018 Through March 2019
George Washington’s Mount Vernon National Sporting Library & Museum
Starting in late November and through the end of the year,
Christmas past meets Christmas present at George Washington’s
estate. Just as the Washingtons celebrated the holiday with family
and friends, visitors can start a new tradition of visiting Mount
Vernon this holiday season. On select dates during this festive
time, you’re also invited to visit the estate for Mount Vernon by
Candlelight Tours — a candlelit, character-guided tour where you
will learn more about holiday traditions in 18th-century Virginia. Discover a revealing perspective on the history and culture of
women as equestrians, their depictions in sporting art and the
evolution of sidesaddle tack and attire represented in British,
Continental and American art from the 17th to 20th century. The
exhibition will showcase approximately 50 paintings, works on
paper and sculptures on loan from museums and private collections.
