In Washington D.C., we happily have plenty of all, particularly with the amazing success in
2019 of the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Washington Mystics, who won their
first title, and Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals, who returned the World Series
trophy to the nation’s capital for the first time since 1924.
On the cover of #FlyWashington and inside our pages, we are delighted to feature two of
the astounding athletes that helped make these victories possible – Mystics’ forward, Elena
Delle Donne, and Nationals’ shortstop, Trea Turner. Both demonstrate the qualities of
champions in their performance, philanthropy, gratitude, and love of this great city.
Indeed, we invite everyone to the Washington D.C. region this spring to see the magic
firsthand, starting with the spectacular blooms of the cherry trees, which laurel the parks,
gardens, and countryside from late March to mid-April. While stopping to smell the flowers,
explore the revitalized of the revitalized Navy Yard neighborhood, named one of the 12
coolest neighborhoods in the world by Forbes magazine. Considering the bounty of dining,
entertainment, and activity there – including Nationals Park – we heartily agree.
Part of what places Washington D.C. among the first cities of the world is its global
connections, thanks to Reagan National and Washington Dulles International airports.
This spring issue of #FlyWashington lets you look afresh at the coasts of Iceland, beaches
of Bermuda, culture of Geneva, and Olympic spirit of Tokyo, as it prepares to host the 2020
summer games, demonstrating once again the power of its mission to foster “mutual
understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play.”
