IN THIS ISSUE
The soft, sweet scent of the cherry blossom is not the only aroma in the air in the capital region
this spring. There’s also an abundance of D.C. pride thanks to two new championships: the first
World Series win since 1924, by the Washington Nationals, and the first ever WNBA title by the
Washington Mystics. All the moxie, gumption, and teamwork it took to achieve these victories
are on display in this issue’s cover story featuring the Nationals shortstop, Trea Turner, and
Mystic’s forward, Elena Delle Donne.
That same D.C. pride also extends to the season’s greatest event, the blossoming of the
cherry trees, which transforms the nation’s capital and surroundings into a radiant pink that
must be seen to be believed. #FlyWashington shows you the best views in this issue’s guide
to the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
The warming weather also encourages long D.C. strolls in our favorite neighborhoods, this
time, in the revitalized Navy Yard on the Anacostia riverfront, bursting with new restaurants,
bars, and hotels, while parkland along the riverfront ties it all up in a pretty green bow.
As the travelers we are, we can never help taking advantage of the easy access to almost
the entire world from Reagan and Dulles. This time #FlyWashington hops international
flights to Iceland to explore the newly opened Arctic Coast Way; Bermuda, for adventure
on land and sea; Geneva, Switzerland, to soak up culture and cuisine; and Tokyo, Japan,
which is preparing a blow-out party for the 2020 Summer Olympics, with festivals and events
throughout much of the year.
Closer to home, we swing through Miami, a global capital for art; St. Augustine, Florida,
the oldest city in the U.S.; Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where nature replaces neon;
and Manchester, New Hampshire, so much more than handshake stop for presidential
candidates. And for easy D.C. day trips, we explore Arlington; Ocean City; and Potomac —
all worth adding a day to your D.C. travel plans.
There are many reasons to stop and smell the flowers in Washington. D.C. this spring.
