WASHINGTON DC’ S H STREET NE CORRIDOR

By Nevin Martell
Think of H Street NE as Washington DC’ s Little Brooklyn. This vibrant northeast neighborhood is oftentimes called the Atlas District. Washington, DC’ s H Street NE Corridor was built in 1849. Streetcars followed 23 years later, creating a successful business center and encouraging development in the neighborhood. They ran up and down the street until they were replaced by buses in 1949. This neighborhood has now become a great place for residents and visitors with its diverse dining options, nightlife, music and the arts. After more than 50 years since streetcars last serviced the streets of Washington, DC, the new DC Street Car services the H St NE corridor from Union Station to Benning Road.
Visitors will find some of the most talked about restaurants, coolest shops and liveliest events. With the support of the city and an influx of forward thinking entrepreneurs, the neighborhood has flourished.
GETTING THERE
Located northwest of the Capitol Building, the H Street Corridor is easy to access. Union Station, which is on the red line, is the closest Metro stop. From there you can either take the X2 bus, stroll east, or take the new DC Streetcar.
